The avant-garde movement (in fashion) mystifies me.
I’m not gonna pretend I have a clue about it, nor that it’s my style… but I have always had respect for those who master this fashion genre and make it seem so effortlessly cool.
Many times I find myself in such awe at how cool they look that makes me wanna go for it, but then I think that would just be me trying to adopt or imitate a style rather than own it… so it would probably come off as a disguise on me.
Accepting this, doesn’t change the fact that I admire the work of avant-gardistes and how they are willing to express themselves in radical ways and push boundaries.
I’m aware that there are probably thousands of avant-garde designers out there, but the ones that I know and admire for quite a while now are: Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto.
So when I found out I would have the opportunity to shoot at Yamamoto’s SS15 show I was thrilled!
It turned out to be a completely different experience from other shows I’ve shot, and also more challenging. Yamamoto doesn’t go for “obvious” beauty, so as someone who is usually drawn to evidently-pretty details I had to push myself a little further.
I think these photos don’t necessarily do proper justice to the work and essence that I witnessed that day, but hopefully I’ll get new opportunities to shoot, understand and transmit better the work of this designer.
